The Direct Selling Industry
Direct Selling and the Entrepreneurial Spirit
A dynamic segment of our economy with 1.3 million Canadian workers associated with it, direct sales boasted a vigorous 25% growth in the last two years – from $1.57 to $1.96 billion – and sustained a 10% to 20% increase over a decade. As a delivery channel, because direct sales isn’t restricted by a permanent retail outlet, consumers can access hundreds of product choices:
Certainly, while non-store retail is common (catalogues, Internet sales, etc.), direct selling is the only personalized, interactive channel. And, for many who can’t find what they need in local stores, or don’t have Web access – 26% of direct selling consumers live in rural areas and 13% are over 65 in age – direct selling brings them goods they might not otherwise find.
Of the 60+ companies in Canada’s robust direct sales industry, more than 2/3 are DSA members, including global firms with household names such as Avon, Mary Kay, Nu Skin, Quixtar, Shaklee, and Canada-based companies like Epicure Selections. The DSA also represents more than 600,000 Independent Sales Contractors (ISCs) whose sales were more than $1.96 billion.
Direct selling provides important benefits to individuals who desire an opportunity to earn an income and build a business of their own; to consumers who enjoy an alternative to shopping centers, department stores or the like; and to the consumer products market. It offers an alternative to traditional employment for those who desire a flexible income earning opportunity to supplement their household income, or whose responsibilities or circumstances do not allow for regular part-time or full time employment. In many cases, direct selling opportunities develop into a fulfilling career for those who achieve success and choose to pursue their independent direct selling business on a full time basis.
Have you always wanted to start your own business but don't have the capital to invest? Direct selling offers a low cost alternative to traditional business ownership. In direct selling, products and services are marketed directly to customers, generally in their homes or the homes of others, through personal explanation and demonstration. Each independent sales contractor (ISC) or distributor sets their own personal goals and objectives, and works as much as she or he chooses. Success depends only on individual ambition and willingness to work. There are no restrictions to becoming a direct sales entrepreneur — it is open to all without regard to age, gender, race, education, marital status, or previous experience. With more and more Canadians abandoning the corporate world and going into business for themselves, direct selling industry is one of the fastest-growing industries in Canada.

PATRICK DEMPSEY: AVON MAN !!!

ON ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT
No one is more surprised than dreamy Patrick Dempsey that he's launching a new men's cologne with Avon this fall.
"I can't believe I have a cologne, it's really hysterical -- and people really enjoy it!" he joked at last night's NYC launch party for "Patrick Dempsey Unscripted."
The "Grey's Anatomy" hunk credits his wife, makeup artist and Avon consultant Jillian, with getting him on-board for the fragrance, which launches in November: "I couldn't imagine doing it with anybody else. We worked very closely and I think that's part of the fun. It kind of brought us together as a couple in a lot of ways."
The amateur race-car driver also dug shooting the outdoorsy ad campaign for the scent, which shows him driving a vintage car. "It was a fun shoot to do with the cars, and certainly that's my passion."
"Unscripted" will retail through www.avon.ca Avon representatives nationwide. Other star Avon partners include Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Conrad.

NUMBER ONE SPEECH

NUMBER ONE SPEECH
"Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. "There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win. "Every time a football player goes to play his trade he's got to play from the ground up - from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's O.K. You've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you've got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second. "Running a football team is no different than running any other kind of organization - an army, a political party or a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win - to beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think it is. "It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they are there - to compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules - but to win. "And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat. "I don't say these things because I believe in the 'brute' nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear - is that moment when he has to work his heart out in a good cause and he's exhausted on the field of battle - victorious." --Vince Lombardi
